J. PAUL GETTY Jr.
CHARITABLE
TRUST

Supporting Unpopular Causes

Registered Charity No. 292360

BACKGROUND

The J Paul Getty Jr Charitable Trust started distributing funds in 1986. Since then nearly £32 million has been given to over 3,000 worthwhile causes all over the UK.

The Trust was endowed by Sir Paul Getty KBE, who died in April 2003 in London, where he had lived since the 1980s. He took a close interest in the Trust, but also continued to make major personal gifts to the arts and other causes in England (£50 million to the National Gallery, £3 million to Lord's Cricket Ground, £17 million to the British Film Institute, £1 million towards the Canova Three Graces, £5 million towards the restoration of St. Paul's Cathedral). These were personal gifts and had no connection with this Trust.

Nor has this Trust any connection with the Getty Trust in the USA, to which J. Paul Getty Senior left his money, and which finances the J. Paul Getty Museum in California. These two trusts, one very large and one small by comparison, should not be confused by people who apply to us!

The Trust, which now has capital of about £55 million, made grants totalling £1.8 million in 2006.
